MRG Live Presents: Bobby Bazini

For his first two albums, singer/songwriter Bobby Bazini wrote alone and dreamed up an earthy breed of guitar-driven soul that earned him multiple Juno Award nominations. But for his third full-length and second for the US, the 27-year-old Quebec native decided to change up his approach and collaborate with esteemed songwriters such as country sensation Chris Stapleton. Along with joining in sessions in Nashville—a lifelong ambition for Bazini, who grew up on his grandmother’s Johnny Cash records—he traveled to L.A. and to London, where he quickly came up with the powerful opening track for Summer Is Gone. 
Fiercely intense but supremely joyful, “Blood’s Thicker Than Water” brilliantly blends smoldering grooves, blazing guitar work, and gospel-esque harmonies. “As soon as that song came together I said, ‘This is how I want the album to sound,’” Bazini recalls. “It’s got sort of a reckless attitude and a bluesy sound, but at the same time it feels so new.” And as Bazini’s vocals glide from raspy growl to sweet falsetto, “Blood’s Thicker Than Water” reveals the rich emotional texture of his songwriting. “The song is about my three brothers and me,” Bazini explains. “It’s about how important music is in our family, how it’s always kept us together and just runs in our blood.”
Produced by Martin Terefe (Shawn Mendes, James Blunt, James Morrison), Summer Is Gone matches Bazini’s classic singer/songwriter sensibilities with a boundless passion inspired by legendary soul artists like Otis Redding and Al Green. In bringing the album to life, Bazini and his fellow musicians recorded live as a full band, carving out a raw, rugged sound later refined with spirited string arrangements, fiery horn sections, and subtle electronic effects.
That lush but gritty dynamic infuses tracks like lead single “C’est la Vie,” a feel-good anthem built on sweeping melody and Bazini’s soaring vocals. “The message of ‘C’est la Vie’ is that when things get rough, sometimes the best thing you can do is let it go and set yourself free,” says Bazini. Elsewhere on Summer Is Gone, Bazini gracefully shifts from the slow-burning balladry of “Only” to the moody romanticism and cinematic intensity of “Leonard Cohen” to the groove-fueled R&B of “Strangers.” And on the wistful but deeply uplifting title track, Bazini brings cascading piano work, soul-soothing harmonies, and a masterful vocal performance to Summer Is Gone’s epic seven-minute finale.
 Raised in the rural town of Mont-Laurier, Bazini began playing guitar as a kid, thanks partly to impromptu lessons from his dad. At age 12, soon after his parents divorced, he went to live with his grandmother and quickly immersed himself in her country-heavy record collection. “I was really inspired by Johnny Cash and started discovering more and more music, like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and all those Stax and Motown records,” he remembers. Like most people in his hometown, Bazini grew up with French as his first language, but took it upon himself to learn English. “All my favorite artists sang in English and I wanted to follow in their footsteps, so I figured out how to speak the language by watching TV and listening to records,” he says. By age 16 he’d started writing songs of his own, crafting all of his lyrics in English, and within a year made his onstage debut with a performance at a school variety show.
At age 18, Bazini landed a slot at a summer festival in Mont-Laurier, where local radio DJ Hugo Sabourin caught his set and soon connected him with his first manager. After releasing his debut single “I Wonder” in 2009, Bazini made his full-length debut with 2010’s much-acclaimed Better in Time. Along with premiering at no. 4 on Billboard’s Canadian Albums chart, Better in Time received platinum certification from the Canadian Recording Industry Association and scored two nominations at the 2011 Juno Awards (New Artist of the Year and Pop Album of the Year). Also certified platinum, Bazini’s 2014 follow-up Where I Belong won him another two nominations at the 2015 Juno Awards, including Album of the Year.
In creating Summer Is Gone—a bravely intimate album imbued with a bittersweet mood—Bazini drew a great deal of inspiration from looking back at his early years in making music. “That day at the festival when I met Hugo is also the day I met my girlfriend who I’ve been with ever since—so in a way it’s like my whole life started at that moment,” he says. “The past nine years have gone by so fast, with all this recording and touring, so the title of Summer Is Gone is referring to that nostalgia for a time when we were younger and things were much simpler.”
But while a certain melancholy instills many of the songs on Summer Is Gone, Bazini’s warmth as a vocalist and ingenuity as a songwriter ultimately make for an undeniably hopeful album. “After we released ‘C’est la Vie,’ there were people writing me and telling me, ‘This is exactly what I needed right now,’ which I’m so happy about,” says Bazini. “Even when the songs are a little darker, they can still help you see things in a positive way. That’s what I most want to do with my music: have that positive impact and help people to feel better.”

BIO (French) : C’est seul avec sa guitare que l’auteur-compositeur-interprète Bobby Bazini compose ses deux premiers albums.  Il crée un son inspiré de guitares épurées, de sonorités organiques et de soul.  Son qui lui a valu plusieurs récompenses. Mais pour ce troisième album, deuxième pour les États-Unis, le Québécois de 27 ans modifie son approche et collabore avec une prestigieuse liste d’auteurs-compositeurs de Los Angeles, Nashville et Londres, incluant Martin Terefe, Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, One Direction), Samuel Dixon (Adele, Sia), Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, James Bay), Eg White (Florence and the Machine, Adele) et la sensation Country, Chris Stapleton.
« J’admire le résultat de collaborations musicales.  Écrire avec de nouvelles personnes entraîne souvent tes chansons dans des univers où seul, tu ne les aurais pas transportées.  J’ai été poussé à essayer de nouvelles techniques. On m’a fait aborder l’écriture de manière différente.   J’ai été très privilégié de travailler avec une liste de rêve d’auteurs-compositeurs.  Ça crée un beau mélange de matériel.  Avec tant d’idées différentes, l’étape de sélection des chansons est à la fois déchirante mais tellement excitante ! »
Mais c’est principalement à Londres que lui vient l’inspiration pour l’opus Summer is gone.
Bien que le son de Bazini demeure proche de ses inspirations passées, les bases musicales de son nouvel opus seront à la fois familières tout en proposant des univers inattendus combinant de nouveaux tempos explorés pour la première fois par l’artiste. 
Le résultat sur Summer is Gone est époustouflant et marque une progression logique d’un artiste qui élève son art à un niveau supérieur.  « Pour mon premier album, j’ai essentiellement enregistré les premières chansons que j’ai écrit. Pour mon deuxième, j’ai cheminé et suis devenu un artiste avec une vision claire de la direction que je souhaitais empruntée.  Je voulais être plus « old school ».  Travailler avec Larry Klein et Booker T a nuancé mon deuxième album de cette ambiance plus classique, dit Bazini.  Maintenant, je veux garder le côté organique tout en modernisant et mélangeant l’ancien et le nouveau Bazini.  L’expérience Summer is Gone se résume en une période énergisante et grisante »
Élevé à Mont-Laurier, Bazini a commencé à jouer de la guitare étant enfant, grâce, en partie, à des leçons de son père. À l'âge de 12 ans, peu de temps après le divorce de ses parents, il part habiter à la résidence de sa grand-mère où il vivra une immersion complète en musique. « J'ai vraiment été inspiré par Johnny Cash, idole de ma grand-mère, et j'ai commencé à découvrir de plus en plus de musique comme Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen et tous ces disques de Stax et de Motown », se rappelle-t-il.  Bazini a grandi avec le français comme langue maternelle et c’est de manière totalement autodidacte qu’il apprend la langue de Shakespeare.  « Tous mes artistes préférés chantaient en anglais et je voulais suivre leurs traces. Alors j'ai appris l’anglais en regardant la télévision et en écoutant des disques », dit-il.  A 16 ans, il commence à écrire ses propres chansons… en anglais.  Cette année-là, il fait ses débuts sur scène lors d’un spectacle scolaire.               
À l'âge de 18 ans, Bazini décroche une place lors d'un festival d'été à Mont-Laurier où le DJ de la radio locale, Hugo Sabourin, remarque sa prestation et le met en contact avec son premier manager.  I Wonder est lancé en 2009.               
Bazini propose son premier album en 2010 ; Better in time.  Rapidement, l’histoire fera de Better in Time un succès certifié platine.  En 2011, Better In Time obtient deux nominations aux Juno Awards  (révélation et album pop de l'année).                 
Where I belong, sorti en 2014 connait le même destin avec une certification platine et deux autres nominations aux Juno Awards 2015, dont album de l’année.  Il sera de plus couronné meilleur vendeur canadien de l’année 2014.               
En créant Summer is Gone Bazini s’est inspiré de ses jeunes années en tant que musicien.  « Ce jour-là au festival, quand j'ai rencontré Hugo, c'est aussi le jour où j'ai rencontré ma petite amie avec qui je partage toujours ma vie... Ainsi, en quelque sorte, c'est comme si toute ma vie avait commencé à ce moment-là », dit-il.  « Les neuf dernières années sont passées si vite, avec tous ces enregistrements et ces tournées… Summer Is Gone fait aussi référence à cette nostalgie du temps où nous étions plus jeunes et insouciants…où les choses semblaient toujours beaucoup plus simples. »               
Bien qu’une certaine mélancolie imprègne plusieurs des chansons sur Summer is gone, la chaleur vocale de Bazini nous transporte dans un univers rempli d’espoir.  « Après la sortie de C'est la Vie, il y avait des gens qui m'écrivaient et me disaient : « C’est exactement ce dont j'avais besoin en ce moment. »  « Même lorsque les chansons sont un peu plus sombres, elles peuvent encore vous aider à voir les choses d'une manière positive. C'est ce que je veux faire avec ma musique ; avoir cet impact positif et aider les gens à se sentir mieux. »
